Same suspect believed responsible for separate sexual assaults

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

Two sexual assaults that occurred about two weeks apart may have been committed by the same person, authorities said Friday.

The first assault happened July 18 at a residence in northeast Bakersfield, and the second incident occurred Thursday when a suspect forced entry at an apartment complex in east Bakersfield, Kern County Sheriff's deputies said. In both incidents the victims were bound and then sexually assaulted.

Also, detectives learned of an attempted sexual assault July 1 at the same apartment complex on Virginia Avenue where Thursday's assault took place. The suspect in Thursday's assault is described as a dark-skinned male, 6 feet tall, medium build, and was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and ski mask.

There were also two burglaries reported at the Virginia Avenue apartment complex, one on March 25 and one on May 14. Detectives said those two burglaries were possibly committed by the same suspect wanted for the sexual assaults.

In each case, the suspect described by witnesses and victims is similar. Similar property was stolen during each incident, and four of the incidents occurred during the early morning hours.

Detectives are asking the public to use extra caution at home, and ensure windows and doors are locked. Be wary of strangers and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Anyone with information on these cases is asked to call the Kern County Sheriff's Office at 861-3110 or Secret Witness at 322-4040. Anonymous text tips can be sent to TIP411 (847411); just type the keyword "KCSO" prior to the message.
