Firefighters called to near drowning

Kern County firefighters helped a boy breathe again after he was found at the bottom of a swimming pool Friday afternoon.

The boy was swimming with other children in a pool in the 5200 block of San Mateo Drive when he slipped off a floating toy, according to a Kern County Fire Department news release. The boy was found at the bottom of the pool's shallow end and an adult got the boy out of the water.

The fire department was called at about 3:15 p.m. for a report of a possible drowning. Fire crews cleared the boy's airways and helped restore his breathing, the news release said. They gave the child oxygen and suctioning until an ambulance arrived and a firefighter rode along to the hospital.
