An 85-year-old Arizona woman was killed and the driver of the truck that crashed into her was hospitalized Wednesday night after a five vehicle pileup on Highway 99.
The crash started at about 3 p.m. on southbound Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road as traffic slowed for construction ahead, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Marvin Casey said. A 39-year-old Porterville man driving a white pickup didn't notice traffic had stopped in front of him and ran into the back of a silver Hyundai in the No. 2 lane. The Hyundai rammed into the vehicle in front of it, causing a chain crash.
The driver of the Hyundai, Arletta McIsaac, of Sun City, Ariz., was taken to Kern Medical Center where she was died at 4:05 p.m., according to the Kern County Sheriff's Department coroner section. The Porterville man was also taken to Kern Medical Center with serious head injuries.
Two of the three other drivers involved in the crash had minor to moderate injuries, according to Casey. A 42-year-old man in a 1996 Silverado pickup, who is from Bakersfield, had pain in his chest and head, and a 57-year-old man driving a 2003 Dodge Ram, also from Bakersfield, had a laceration to his right eye and forehead and pain in his chest.
A 53-year-old man from Grafton, Ohio, who was driving a 2006 Toyota Highlander, did not have any injuries, Casey said. All three were taken to KMC by ambulance.
The road was reduced to one lane for about one hour and 20 minutes. All lanes were open again at 4:37 p.m., Casey said.
