Several Bakersfield firefighters will attend a memorial service in Prescott, Ariz. in honor of 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots who perished June 30 while fighting a wildfire not far from that community.
The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Bakersfield Fire Department said in a news release.
It's likely representatives of the Kern County Fire Department and many other departments across the country will also send representative firefighters to the memorial.
"A first responder funeral is a rite of honor that is necessary for the first responder family to have closure," authorities said in the release. "It is where we remember and honor our fallen brothers with ceremony and tradition."
Before they depart for Prescott, city firefighters will gather at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Fire Station 15, 1315 Buena Vista Road.
Meanwhile, the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association, together with the Prescott Fire Fighters Charities, have established a 501(c)3 relief fund at any Chase bank branch.
