By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Kern County sheriff's investigators are trying to determine how a Bakersfield man received serious injuries to his face and head at a birthday party near Delano late Saturday.

According to a news release of the Kern County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to the 10400 block of Mettler Avenue at 10:53 p.m. There they found 53-year-old Gabriel Vega, of Bakersfield, unconscious in a parking lot, suffering from injuries to his face and head.

Deputies discovered the injuries occurred at a birthday party attended by more than 100 people. As they continued their investigation, they found a second man, Jose Herrera Arceo, 33, asleep inside a nearby vacant residence on the property. Arceo was suffering from apparent minor injuries to his face.

Vega was taken to a Bakersfield-area hospital where he was admitted in serious condition. Arceo received treatment at a Delano hospital. No suspects had been identified as of early Sunday.
