On Saturday July 6, 2013 the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail and its partners in the Kern County AVOID coalition conducted a DUI / Driver License Checkpoint in the 4600 block of Stockdale Highway, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.
While 1,231 drivers made use of turn-outs and chose not to participate in the checkpoint, 1,815 vehicles were screened with the following results:
-- 5 DUI arrests (including 1 with prior DUI arrests)
-- 35 Drivers were found not have a valid driver license
-- 5 of those drivers were found to have a suspended license
-- 1 possession of marijuana citation was issued
21 Vehicles were impounded
Of 40 vehicles held for various offenses, 19 met the criteria of CVC 2814.2 (c). Officers were able to contact the registered owners and released those vehicles to the registered owner / licensed driver prior to the conclusion of the checkpoint.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
