Massive landslide closes I-80 in the Sierra

TRUCKEE -- Interstate 80 has been closed in both directions near the California-Nevada state line after flash flooding from Sierra thunderstorms sent rocks and mud flowing onto the freeway.

The California Department of Transportation says Tuesday's landslide is the size of a football field, with mud and debris 3 to 8 inches deep. Lanes were closed in both directions 1.5 miles from the Nevada border.

California Highway Patrol Officer Trevor Fee says westbound traffic is being diverted at the state line while eastbound traffic is being redirected near Truckee. He says workers hope to reopen the interstate to eastbound traffic first and then to westbound traffic later Tuesday night.

Fee says the hot temperatures combined with a thunderstorm caused the mud and rocks to dislodge.
