In an effort to curtail street racing on several south Bakersfield roads, police Saturday stopped 87 drivers.

The effort focused on the 5200 block of Gosford Road, and the intersection of Ming Avenue with Gosford and Wible Road. Bakersfield Police issued 62 citations for equipment violations, unsafe vehicles, and registration and driver's license violations.

Five vehicles were impounded and 29 were taken out of service for illegal modifications.

Police had received numerous complaints from area business owners about illegal street racing and reckless driving, in addition to concerns their parking lots were being used as staging areas.

Businesses also complained of loud music, loitering, littering and obstruction of roadways during business hours.
