By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
A dozen family members in east Bakersfield were put out of their home early Monday by a fire that started in a vehicle before spreading to a carport and then a residence.
A news release from the Kern County Fire Department said the fire started at about 6:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of Victoria Drive. It said the vehicle where the blaze began was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived.
In an aggressive effort by 25 department personnel, crews contained the fire to one bedroom an a quarter of the residence's attic, although the vehicle and carport where it was parked sustained major damage, the release stated.
Damage to the structure was estimated at $50,000.
The Kern County chapter of the American Red Cross reported providing food, shoes, water, toys and other goods to six adults and five children of the family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
