Jail sentence of one year handed down to woman convicted of welfare fraud

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

Miriam Gutierrez was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday as part of her 5-year probationary sentence after pleading no contest to four felony counts of welfare fraud.

Gutierrez had illegally received cash aid, food stamps and Medi-Cal in the amount of $133,553 by lying about her identity, according to a Kern County District Attorney's office news release. She has been ordered to pay back the Department of Human Services and Medi-Cal the full amount plus 10 percent interest for the benefits she received to which she wasn't entitled.
