Police are investigating the death of a man found at the side of a southwest Bakersfield road Saturday as a hit-and-run.
A resident leaving his or her home in the 2800 block of Hosking Road, east of Wible Road, called police at 6:10 a.m. and reported seeing a person on the south side of the road, Bakersfield Police Sgt. Graydon Argast said. He did not know if the initial call for help indicated the person was passed out or possibly deceased.
Police arrived to find the man had suffered major injuries, Argast said.
The man, later identified by the coroner’s office as Nathan Monroe Huggins, 32, of Bakersfield, was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he died.
“At this time we aren’t really sure what happened,” Argast said at the scene at about 10:45 a.m.
Then Saturday afternoon, police said they were investigating the death of Huggins as a hit-and-run, but did not yet have suspect or vehicle information.
It wasn’t known when Huggins was hit, but it likely happened between 9 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, police reported in a news release.
A portion of Hosking Road was blocked Saturday morning as police marked potential pieces of evidence on the road.
