DA touts convictions in three gang cases

Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green announced convictions in three significant gang cases last week.

On April 16, in a case prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Eric Smith, a Kern County jury convicted Encarnacion Barrientos of murder and gang-related charges in the stabbing death of Cruz Martinez. Barrientos is set for sentencing next month and faces 45 years to life in prison.

On Thursday in a case prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Terry McMahon, a jury convicted Irvin Lee Briggs of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an inhabited business.

The incident occurred on Ming Avenue and McDonald Way near the Kern Schools Federal Credit Union as school children were walking to West High School. Briggs is facing more than 20 years in state prison.

On Thursday a jury convicted defendant Ulyses Aviles of voluntary manslaughter. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Nick Palmisano. The defendant stabbed and killed victim Carlos Serrano in a park in Lost Hills in 2009. Aviles' sentencing is scheduled for May.
