Firefighters put out fires Thursday morning in OIldale and Poso Creek.
The first, called the Lot Fire, was in the 200 block of Hickerson Street and began at 9:05 a.m. Crews found a vacant lot with homes on three sides threatened by fire, according to a Kern County Fire Department news release.
High winds hampered firefighters, the news release said, but crews stopped the fire with only minor damage to some fences.
The second fire, called the Brandy Fire, was of vegetation in the 100 block of Brandy Jo Street in Poso Creek. About three acres of grass had been ignited by residents welding a new fence at about 10:10 a.m., the news release said.
The fire's progress was slowed by residents who used water hoses, earth moving equipment and proper fire safety equipment required for welding, firefighters reported.
Nobody was hurt in either fire.
The fire department urged residents to be extremely cautious as fire season begins.
