Use of force in fatal Oildale shooting determined within Sheriff's Office policy

By BREAKING NEWS BLOG

On Monday, the Kern County Sheriff's Office Incident Review Board convened to consider the use of force by deputies in relation to a fatal officer-involved shooting which occurred April 18 in Oildale.

The use of force by Sgt. Doug Sword and Deputies Joshua Geissel, Braydon Ferguson, Justin Sawaske, Cody Johnson and Phillip Banks was determined to be within Sheriff's Office policy, according to a news release sent out Tuesday.

The sergeant and deputies fired upon 51-year-old Darren Neal Raines after Raines brandished a gun at them in the 300 block of Belle Avenue, deputies reported. Belle had reportedly been firing a handgun in the roadway and was the suspect from a spousal abuse case earlier in the day.

Raines retreated inside his home and SWAT members found him dead inside.
