A gang member was convicted Friday in Kern County Superior Court for the May 2010 murder of an innocent bystander during a shooting, while another was sentenced for an attempted murder charge, according to a news release from the District Attorney's office.
Jose Noe Rodriguez, 21, was convicted of first degree murder in the death of Santos Balleza. Rodriguez was a member of the South Side Criminals, a Delano base street gang.
On May 13, 2010, in McFarland, Rodriguez was in a verbal fight with a rival gang member. He pulled out a gun and shot seven times into a crowd of people, according to the news release. Balleza was hit and died from the wound on the way to Kern Medical Center. Rodriguez also hit another man, Michael Ramirez, who was injured but survived.
Rodriguez' sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5. He faces up to 90 years to life in prison.
Meanwhile, Alberto Ramirez was sentenced Friday to 36 to life in prison for attempted murder and mayhem. He was convicted of the attempted murder and mayhem in July. He was a member of South Side Bakers, a street gang from Bakersfield.
On July 9, 2010, on Forrest Street in Bakersfield, Ramirez attacked and stabbed two victims, Joseph Miranda and Nathaniel Neal, according to the news release. Both were seriously injured, according to the news release.
