A machete-wielding man allegedly stabbed his father and held police at bay for 40 minutes before officers took him into custody with the help of a canine and a Taser.
Augustine Patino, 23, was booked on suspicion of crimes including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said officers arrived at a residence in the 3000 block of Lotus Lane in east Bakersfield at 9:24 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a man stabbing his father. Officers found Patino armed with a machete at the front of the home.
Patino refused officers' demands to put the weapon down. Police said he repeatedly swung the machete at officers.
Police said they used specialty impact munitions to disarm Patino, but they were ineffective. Patino then attacked a small family dog with the machete and threw the weapon in the air.
At that point, police released a canine and several officers took Patino into custody with the help of the dog and the use of a Taser. Patino suffered minor puncture wounds from the dog and was taken to a local hospital.
The dog suffered a minor wound, police said. The father had been taken to a hospital before police arrived.
