A 57-year-old Bakersfield woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to making and presenting a false claim against the U.S.

Judi Ann Papagni, 57, prepared tax returns with inflated income that allowed the taxpayer to receive payments of the Earned Income Credit to which they were not entitled, according to a news release from the Office of U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner. Some of the individuals Papagni prepared returns for had no knowledge that she had obtained their identifying information and filed false and fraudulent returns in their names.

Over a four-year period, Papagni admitted she prepared fraudulent refunds totaling approximately $82,564, the news release said.

Papagni is scheduled to be sentenced March 10 and faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Daily Deal!
