Parents arrested in connection with child's death

Kern County Sheriff's detectives arrested the parents of an infant that died Saturday on suspicion of child abuse and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Homicide detectives were called to a report of an infant not breathing at apartments in the 1500 block of S. Union Avenue at about 8:39 a.m. by the Bakersfield City Fire Department, according to a sheriff's department news release and Sgt. Tim Liszka.

Three-month-old Adrian Cortez was found unresponsive and taken to the emergency room at Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:19 a.m., according to a coroner's office news release.

Adrian's parents, 37-year-old Teresa Corrales and 38-year-old Luis Cortez, were arrested and booked into the downtown jail on charges of willful cruelty to a child and being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to the jail's inmate website.

An autopsy is scheduled for the coming week to determine how Adrian died. Liszka declined to release any details about the circumstances of the child's death because the investigation is ongoing.
