Arizona man arrested in Kernville arson fire
By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN
Authorities have arrested an Arizona man in connection with a New Year's Day arson fire that destroyed the Riverside One Stop convenience store and gas station in Kernville, the Kern Valley Sun reported Friday.
Citing Capt. Greg Ochoa of the Kern County Fire Department's arson unit, the Sun reported that Kevin Cheatham, 29, was arrested in Arizona on Friday morning. According to Ochoa, Cheatham, a resident of Arizona, faces one felony count of arson of a structure, and four felony counts of arson to property as a result of the fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to the business and its contents, the Sun said.
The newspaper did not identify the Arizona city where Cheatham was arrested or the law enforcement agency that made the arrest.
Reached Saturday, a spokesman for the Kern County Fire Department declined to verify the arrest had been made or provide further details about the case. Cheatham will be extradited to Kern County, Ochoa told the Sun.
