Man in critical condition following office-involved shooting

A man is in critical condition following an officer-involved shooting.
The shooting occurred after the Bakersfield Police Department Communications Center started receiving calls of shots fired in the 700 block of Terrace Way at approximately 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, according to a police department news release.
When officers arrived to investigate, they heard shots being fired as they were walking through the apartment complex. They saw a man holding a rifle, identified themselves as police officers and ordered him to drop the rifle, police said.
The man refused and ran from officers. During the foot pursuit "an officer involved shooting occurred," the news release said. The man was hit and taken to a local hospital with major injuries. The news release sent at about 4:40 a.m. said he was in critical condition. At about 11:30 a.m. Lt. Jeremy Grimes said there was no update on his condition and that man's name was not being released.
A rifle was recovered and no officers were injured during the incident. Grimes said he did not know how many officers were involved in the incident and that police were still conducting their investigation and interviewing witnesses.
