Man arrested in connection with attempted firebombing

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A Bakersfield man was arrested on six counts of attempted murder early Wednesday in the throwing of a Molotov cocktail through the front window of a southwest home occupied by two adults and four children.

Bakersfield police arrested Marco Gutierrez, 24, in connection with the 11:51 p.m. Tuesday incident, in which someone threw the incendiary device into a residence in the 6200 block of Landfair Drive.

The device had been lit and thrown through the window but extinguished itself upon impact, according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release.

Another Molotov cocktail was thrown at the residence but did not ignite.

Police said the suspects also left behind two other Molotov cocktails that were not lit.

The motive for the attempted firebombing appeared to be related to domestic violence, according to police.

Shortly after the incident, the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting into an inhabited dwelling in the 700 block of Park Drive, in southeast Bakersfield.

Evidence at the scene indicated Gutierrez and a second suspect may have also been responsible for that offense.

At 2:55 a.m., Bakersfield police arrested Gutierrez without incident at Aldo's Night Club, at 1900 Union Ave.

He was arrested on suspicion of six counts of attempted murder, four counts of possession of an incendiary device, attempted arson and conspiracy and booked into Kern County Jail.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information on it is asked to call Detective Ken Sporer at 326-3275 or BPD at 327-7111.
