Pedro Avellino Reyes was incarcerated Feb. 18 for attempted carjacking and was serving an 18-month sentence, according to a news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The circumstances of his escape were unclear Tuesday night and efforts to contact prison officials were unsuccessful.
