Boy, 2, dies after being found unconscious in pool

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

A 2-year-old boy found unconscious and not breathing in a backyard pool Monday afternoon died later, and deputies are continuing investigating his death.

Dutch William Shirley was found in an above-ground pool in the 900 block of El Tejon Avenue in Bakersfield just before 5 p.m. According to a Kern County Sheriff's Office release, he had been left in the care of Ashley Martin and Joshua Smith, both 28, while the boy's mother was at work. The boy was allowed to play in the pool with Martin's 6-year-old child.

According to investigators, Martin left the children under her boyfriend's supervision while she left to pick up the Dutch's mother from work.

When Martin returned home, she asked Smith about the children's whereabouts. He allegedly said he thought the 2-year-old had gone with her.

Martin then found Dutch floating in the pool.

He was taken to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital emergency room where he was declared dead at 6:39 p.m.

The investigation is continuing.
