Fire roars through abandoned home in McFarland

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

McFARLAND -- An abandoned two-story house in this northern Kern County farming community was destroyed by fire Saturday evening.

Crews from the Kern County Fire Department responded to the blaze in the 100 Block of Second Street at 6:46 p.m., the fire department said in a news release Sunday.

When the first crews arrived, the home -- estimated to have been 2,500 square feet in size -- was already about 50 percent involved with flames, the department reported. Crews immediately activated a second alarm.

Firefighters faced a number of challenges at the scene, according to the release, including arcing electrical lines, stairs failing and a difficult-to-access basement that was filled with contents.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which caused an estimated $150,000 in damage. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
