Sentencing was continued Thursday for a man convicted of first-degree murder after he acted as the getaway driver during a robbery in a grocery store parking lot.

In April a jury convicted Maxamillon Lee McDonald, 27, of murder as well as two counts of second degree robbery and participating in a street gang. McDonald's attorney Fred Dorton said he just joined the case at McDonald's last hearing and recently received the case file and transcripts. Dorton said he asked the judge for more time to review those records.

"We need to assess what happened at trial," he said following Thursday's hearing.

Kern County Superior Court Judge Thomas S. Clark granted Dorton's request, rescheduling McDonald's sentencing for Aug. 21 at 8:30 a.m. He apologized for the delay to the attendees who had traveled for the hearing and said he sympathized with the family members of Guadalupe Ramos, the victim.

Prosecutors have said Ramos, 72, was walking to her car in the parking lot of Foods Co. on Haley St. on Aug. 19 when a Christopher Harvell Patterson pulled off her necklace, sending her tumbling to the ground. She died of cardiac arrest.

Patterson dashed to a car that McDonald was driving and Lawrence Gregory Slaughter was also in, fleeing the scene.

Slaughter was convicted of murder, robbery and of committing the crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang in April. He was sentenced to life without parole. A hearing in Patterson's case is set for Friday.
