Traffic checkpoint nets two arrests

A DUI/driver license checkpoint staged Friday night in northeast Bakersfield netted two arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail and the Kern County AVOID coalition operated the checkpoint from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday in the 2300 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue.
A total of 784 vehicles passed through the location, authorities said. Of those, 738 were screened with the following results:
* 2 DUI arrests
*24 drivers were found not have a valid driver's license
* Seven of those drivers were found to have a suspended license
*15 vehicles were impounded
The checkpoint was part of an effort to reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in DUI-related collisions, police said. A major component of the operation was to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober, designated drivers.
Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Police encourage the public to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
