An ATV driver was killed Friday in a crash on Panama Lane east of Highway 43.
The driver, 18, of Bakersfield, had not been identified as of Saturday afternoon. California Highway Patrol officers said the man was riding southbound on a dirt road on private property next to Panama Lane at an unknown speed.
Officers said Mervin L. Williams, 40, of Bakersfield, was headed westbound on Panama lane at 55 mph. The ATV driver allowed his vehicle to enter the westbound lane of Panama Lane.
Williams slammed on the brakes and swerved to the left, but the front end of the ATV hit the right passenger door of the pickup, officers said. The ATV driver was thrown from the vehicle and landed in the westbound traffic lane.
Williams' vehicle slid through the eastbound traffic lane and traveled off the south side of Panama Lane, coming to a stop on the right shoulder of eastbound Panama Lane, according to officers. The ATV driver was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the collision.
