Kern students deliver Christmas cheer to Afghanistan
By Bakosphere
The Kern Valley Sun has shared a touching story involving a Lake Isabella middle school, an American serving in Afghanistan and a bit of Christmas spirit.
Tammy Howard, a teacher at Woodrow Wallace Middle School, last November had her students help the fiance of a relative who was "looking for a way to boost her fiance's spirits during the Christmas holidays."
Howard's students wrote Christmas greetings for Austin Stevens, a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant serving six months in Afghanistan. The care package arrived just before Christmas, delighting a shocked Stevens.
Stevens showed his gratitude after returning to the States earlier this year by driving from Sacramento to Lake Isabella and thanking the students personally. Those students included Tyler Bernstein, a blind boy who gave Stevens his greetings in Braille. That's Stevens thanking Bernstein in Cathy Perfect's photo to the left.
