Previewing Billy Mize documentary project
BY LOUIS AMESTOY Californian staff writer lamestoy@bakersfield.com
Billy Mize was one of the pioneers of the Bakersfield Sound, and now his story is being set to be told as a documentary movie.
Director William J. Saunders is directing the documentary movie and he provides a rich movie trailer on video-sharing Website Vimeo.
During the height of his career, Mize was one of the most important musicisians around, and Saunders does a good job portraying his significant position with stars such as Dean Martin, Merle Haggard and others.
However, Mize's story is one that takes a devastating turn when he suffers a massive stroke in the 1990s. Saunder's film focuses on Mize's efforts to regain his ability to play his beloved guitar.
If the trailer is any indication -- and it not always is -- this should be a fascinating movie, and much of it was shot right here in Bakersfield.
