Glenwood case--some voices

By The Bakersfield Californian

"This is a wakeup call. I'm sorry it took a tragedy like this to bring it to our attention."

-- Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, chair of the California Assembly Aging and Long-term Care Committee.

"This was so horrifying. I've never seen this happen before.... How a nurse can do that is beyond comprehension."

-- Pat McGinnis, founder of California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.

"The consensus is if they are a nurse and if they are at work as a nurse, then they should be offering the appropriate medical care."

-- Russ Heimerich, spokesman for the California Board of Registered Nursing.

"There's a lot of discussion of, if this is legal, should it be?"

-- McGinnis.

"In the event of a health emergency... our practice is to immediately call emergency medical personnel for assistance and to wait.... That is the protocol we followed."

-- Jeffrey Toomer, executive director, Glenwood Gardens.

"I just wish you would let the story die and you would let us be in peace."

-- Pam Bradford, daughter of the patient, the late Lorraine Bayless.
