Doctor shortage? A panel tonight

By The Bakersfield Californian

Local health concerns, and even the question of whether Kern County has enough physicians, will be explored at a panel discussion Tuesday night.

Kern County has 1,200 patients for every primary care physician, nearly double the national benchmark, so a physician shortage exists.

Panelists will include:

* Kern Medical Center CEO Paul Hensler;

* University of California San Francisco Center for the Health Professions Associate Director Catherine Dower, and

* San Joaquin Community Hospital Vice President Jarrod McNaughton.

Californian Executive Editor John Arthur will moderate the discussion, which will be at 7 p.m. at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, 1930 R Street.

It is presented by Zocalo Public Square, a project of the Center for Social Cohesion at Arizona State University and the New America Foundation. It based in Los Angeles and Phoenix.

The event is free and open to the public.
