Health roundup: CBCC to hold fundraiser for transportation program

By The Bakersfield Californian

The CBCC Foundation for Community Wellness is holding a fundraiser for its Patient Transportation Program this Saturday.

The transportation program provides gas cards to local cancer patients and van trips for pediatric patients to appointments in Los Angeles and Madera, as well as rides for adult patients, according to a news release. Michelle Avila, director of the foundation, wrote in an email that the foundation is experiencing increased demand for transportation assistance. Fundraisers like Saturday's event help keep "things moving," she wrote.

Saturday's event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center's parking lot, 6501 Truxtun Ave. Admission is free for spectators, but donations will be accepted. The festivities will include a car/bike show, a craft fair and a chili cook-off.

The American Cancer Society is holding enrollment for its Cancer Prevention Study-3 next month.

Men and women ages 30 to 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are being sought for the study, according to the study's website.

To make an enrollment appointment, visit www.cps3bakersfield.org. Enrollment will take place from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Highway; 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, 5420 California Ave.; and 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at San Joaquin Community Hospital's medical office building in the second floor Rio Bravo Room, 1524 27th St.

At the appointments, participants will be asked to sign a consent form, complete a survey and have a waist circumference measurement and blood sample taken, the website said. Participants will be mailed surveys every few years and receive annual study newsletters.

Visit www.cancer.org/cps3 or call 888-604-5888 for more information about the study.
