Kaiser accepting community grant applications; Houchin gearing up for move to new location

Kaiser Permanente Kern County is accepting proposals for its 2013 community grants.
Kaiser Permanente Kern County Medical Service area will give out more than $200,000 in grants to "local nonprofit health and human service organizations," according to a news release and Kristin Weber, senior community benefits specialist for Kaiser. Grants can range from $5,000 to $25,000, Weber said.
Last year, Kaiser awarded $216,000 to 11 groups. Typically, 10 to 13 grants are given each year, Weber said.
Grants will be given to groups that address access to health insurance coverage and health care services, disproportionate rates of obesity and related conditions, and improving the teen birth rate and infant health rates, the news release said.

Houchin Community Blood Bank's Truxtun Avenue hours will shift this week as the blood bank moves operations from its downtown locations to its new Bolthouse Donor Center.
The blood bank at 5901 Truxtun Ave. will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, according to a blood bank news release.
The blood bank will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and closed all day Saturday.
"It is crucially important that blood donors come in earlier in the week to help maintain adequate levels of inventory over the closure, especially in light of the currently low inventory of most blood types," a blood bank news release said.
The blood bank will be transitioning several offices to the new building in stages over the next four week, the news release said. Operations moving to the new facility from the Houchin's locations at G and H Streets at 26th Street this weekend include the laboratory, quality assurance, manufacturing and distribution.
