Houchin Community Blood Bank has a busy week ahead between hosting a "Donate Life Day" for a young boy suffering from cancer and a paradise getaway promotion.

The donation day, a collaboration among three nonprofits, will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday with 11-month-old Jayce Walker in mind. The young boy from Bakersfield has acute myeloid leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy at Children's Hospital Central California in Madera.

His mother, Alyssa Thompson, said Jayce went to City of Hope on Tuesday for a bone marrow consultation and staff are searching for a donor. Family members have not yet been checked to see if they are a match, she said.

Wednesday's event will be held at Houchin's 11515 Bolthouse Drive location. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner will be dished out from 4 to 7 p.m.

Be The Match will help participants join the national bone marrow registry, and JJ's Legacy will make sure people interested in organ donation are properly signed up. Houchin will take donations of blood and platelets.

Thompson hopes that even if people aren't matches for her son, they may be able to help someone else in need of bone marrow.

On top of Wednesday's event, Houchin is touting a "Two Tickets to Paradise Blood Drive" Saturday through July 20.

The blood bank is hosting two social events with food during the drive. The first is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Bolthouse location; the second is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the blood bank's building at 5901 Truxtun Ave.

All week donors can enter a drawing for a two-person trip to Santa Catalina Island, a news release said.

Donors can visit the Truxtun location from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; or 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Bolthouse location is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Visit www.hcbb.com or call 323-4222 for an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.
