Health roundup: Harvest festival set for farmers market

Kaiser Permanente's Harvest Festival will be held Sunday at the Haggin Oaks Farmers Market.
Dr. Benjamin Ha, assistant medical director for Kaiser Permanente in Kern County, will be on hand for a viewing and discussion of a 20-minute episode of the HBO documentary "The Weight of the Nation" at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Local chefs will face off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The showdown will feature chefs from local restaurants in three rounds of cooking judged by a panel of four food experts, the news release.
The regular farmers market will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A free diabetes screening for people with Type 1 diabetes in their families will be held Monday at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital , according to a news release from the JDRF Central Valley Council.
The screening will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with presentations from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., a reception and light refreshments at the hospital's Founders Hall, 420 34th St., the news release said. Speakers will include Dr. Mark Root, Memorial's chief medical officer, and Ryan Reed, racecar driver and JDRF celebrity advocate.

The deadline to turn in a community survey on Kern County's health needs has been extended to Wednesday.
Kern County residents can take the survey in English or Spanish at www.getstrategy.com/kerncounty or www.healthykern.org, according to a news release. Copies of the survey can be picked up at the following locations:
* Delano Regional Medical Center Marketing Department, 1401 Garces Highway, Delano.
* Kaiser Permanente Public Affairs Department, 5055 California Ave., Suite 110, Bakersfield.
* Mercy & Memorial Hospitals Department of Special Needs and Community Outreach, 2215 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield.
* San Joaquin Community Hospital Marketing Department, 1524 27th St., Bakersfield.
The survey is part of Healthy Kern County's Community Health Needs Assessment, a process that will also include a review of other health indicators, interviews with community leaders and an action planning process, the news release said.
The assessment's results and the action plan will be published on the Healthy Kern County website by June 30, according to the news release.
A Bakersfield Relay for Life team is getting its fundraising going early with a fire truck pull on Saturday, Oct. 27 .
The Pull for Cure fundraiser by the Faithful Fighters team will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bakersfield College in the southwest baseball field parking lot off University Avenue. Teams of 10 people can register and must raise at least $400 for the chance to race another team at pulling a 47,500-pound fire truck 15 feet.
