Jane Lynch on Glee's Future and Getting Animated on the Big Screen

While Glee star Jane Lynch may enjoy a quiet life at home (Lynch is step-mom to wife Lara Embry's daughter Haden, 11) her presence onscreen is anything but small."I am a homebody, so when I escape, I wouldn't want to go anywhere except my own little house," she says. "With my own little thoughts, my own little corner, and my own little chair."
She's earned both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as trash-talking cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the hit Fox show, and she also lends her famous voice to the animated film Wreck-It Ralph, which is up for an Oscar this year.
The actress has hit her stride with animated roles. She voices the character Io (a one-eyed alien who struggles with anger management issues) in the new animated flick Escape From Planet Earth, which opens in theaters today.
Lynch spoke to PARADE about playing angry characters, Glee's future, and more.
On comparisons of Io to other characters she has played.
"The thing that distinguishes Io from Sue Sylvester and anybody else I've played who has anger management issues is that she's really struggling to control it. She's a very earnest and really grateful to Craig Robinson's character, the mouse alien [Doc], and she's trying her best."
On identifying with her characters' personalities.
"I don't think I can play it if I don't. It has to be in me somewhere, absolutely. I have a quick temper, but it's over fast. I always feel shameful at the end of it—the same way Io does."
On working with her Planet Earth costars in the recording studio.
"The only time I spent time with them was on the red carpet at the premiere, so it was really nice to see them. If I didn't know them personally, there were a couple degrees of separation between us. I know Craig, I know George Lopez, I know Rob Corddry and so it was really nice to see Jessica Alba and all those people I've met before."
On Glee's season finale.
"We haven't [gotten to it yet]. I think the writers know where we're leading up to. Ryan [Murphy] works that way, he has an arc for the season. I haven't had my ear to the ground. I'm always the last to know everything. I was on the set when Ricky Martin was there and I was like 'What is he doing here? This is so wonderful!' He said, 'Jane, it was announced three weeks ago."
On where she sees Glee going in the future.
"The fact that we've taken the kids to New York—Rachel and Kurt and now Santana—and they're trying to pursue their passion and art in the Big Apple, I think that's a cool place for us to be. It's working out really well. The audience likes it, I love it, and I love that storyline. I think we'll always have McKinley High. I hope that we always will because that means I'll be there! But we have a whole new string of kids who are sophomores, so we can at least go for two more years with them. It's a great formula and it goes as long as the writers and the creators want to do it."
On Glee costar Jenna Ushkowitz's upcoming memoir, Choosing Glee: 10 Rules to Finding Inspiration, Happiness, and the Real You
. "I didn't give her advice, but she told me about it, and we talked about it. She's really excited and it sounds like something that the world really needs—especially girls. She's got a great story to tell and she's a really lovely girl. She's just a sweetheart."
On her plans for Valentine's Day.
"I don't [have plans] because I feel like Christmas is just over. So I'm holiday'd out."
On her Oscar plans.
"I won't go. I really don't have any plans and I may miss it. Wreck-It Ralph is up [for Best Animated Feature Film] and I was in that, so I'll be rooting for that."
On advice for Seth MacFarlane—from one host to another.
"I have no pointers for Seth MacFarlane. He should have given me pointers."
On her dream costar.
"I would love to work with Jennifer Saunders. She's just an an amazing comedian and actor. I think she's kind of brilliant."
On appearing in Arrested Development again.
"I have not been asked but, boy, I would do it in a second."
