Josh Duhamel: 'Fatherhood Will Be My Greatest Achievement'

Josh Duhamel is ready to take his turn as the hearthrob in the latest Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation. In Safe Haven (Feb. 14), Duhamel stars alongside Julianne Hough as a single dad who gets a second chance at love.The actor, 40, who recently celebrated his fourth wedding anniversary with wife Fergie, talked to Parade.com about getting a glimpse into fatherhood and being romantic on and off the screen.
On playing a single dad of two kids.
"It definitely did give me a glimpse into fatherhood, but I already had an idea of what fatherhood would be like. It’s something I’ve always wanted. It’s the most important thing. When I do become a father, it will be my greatest achievement. It was important for me to connect to the actors playing my kids and make them feel comfortable around me, so I spent time with them beforehand. I’m basically a big kid, so they could act like kids around me. I put as much thought into my relationship with them as my relationship with Julianne because it makes the story that much more believable."
On being a romantic at heart.
It’s not so much about the big gesture; it’s more about being thoughtful. The most romantic things are the little things, like just being there and showing up when you’re supposed to show up. It’s more about the accumulation of little things that really strengthen a relationship rather than one big thing every now and then.
On joining actors suck as Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum as the latest leading man in a Nicholas Spark’s film adaptation.
"I’m a fan of Sparks. There are a few books that I really liked. There have been some guys that I really admire in his movies before, so to be asked to be in this movie was flattering. And I knew that [director] Lasse Hallström would tell a story that wasn’t just overly romantic and sentimental, but human."
On costar Julianne Hough.
"Julianne is an open book. She’s very confident, but very sweet. I really admired that about her. There is no pretention with her, and I knew that it would be easy to connect with her. Even though she didn’t have a lot of experience, I knew that she was not only a disciplined girl who was willing to work, but she was also very open."
On filming in the small town of Southport, North Carolina.
"I had two weeks there before we started filming, so I had a lot of time to just sit and soak it all in. That was invaluable for me because there’s a pace to the lifestyle in a town like Southport that’s really integral to this story, so it was imperative that I sort of fall into the rhythm of this town. It’s always easier for me to film a movie on location because there’s nothing else to focus on but the movie. In this case, being in the town that the story was actually written in was something that you usually don’t get to do. It was a real luxury."
On his upcoming hosting gig at the Kids’ Choice Awards on March 23.
"I have a lot of secret plans in store. I can’t wait. I’m excited to lead these kids into fun, chaos, and of course, slime. It will be fun. I get to show the world what an idiot I am!"
