Barbra Streisand on Her Road Trip with Marlon Brando and Her Doll Collection

Barbra Streisand's return to the big screen was an unconventional choice for the legend: The Guilt Trip, which opens December 19 and co-stars Seth Rogen, is a buddy comedy about a son and his lovingly meddling mother's cross-country road trip. But when the co-stars sat down for a recent chat, it was clear why Streisand chose the quirky project. Besides the fact that the production built most of the sets forty-five minutes away from her Malibu home (including ones that were supposed to represent snowy Tennessee!), Streisand and Rogen's easy, hilarious onscreen and offscreen chemistry brought out the lighter side of the living legend.
During the 30-minute interview in Los Angeles, which was live-streamed to 20 cities across the country, Streisand opened up about her fabulous life which includes a trip to the desert with Marlon Brando, doing something naughty with Peter Sellers, and her random collections:
On whether she's seen Seth's movies.
"I have seen a few of them. I was a little shocked because I am a little bit of a prude. I was like ‘He said that? He showed that? He did that?’ But I thought he was really cool. [We’re] two generations put together."
On her road trip with Marlon Brando.
"Marlon Brando, who I actually went on a road trip with. A short one. He wanted to go to the desert to see the wildflowers. He wanted to stay overnight but I said I didn’t know him well enough but that I would go for the day. It was funny. It was a daytime trip to see the sagebrush and wildflowers. We went to a hamburger joint with a creaky screen door. I remember sitting there at the counter and thinking ‘This is Marlon Brando!’ I’ll write about it in my book one day."
On her various collections.
"I love American history. And I never had a doll as a kid. And couches. I never had couches. I have a lot of stuff. I don’t collect stuff now. I’m through with that now. I have enough stuff, too much stuff. "
On her one crazy night with Peter Sellers.
“I was married to Elliott Gould and [Sellers] was with Britt Ekland and the funny thing is we went to a restaurant and we started to riff on having steak ice cream. It was funny at the time. It’s not funny now because you’re not high. It was very funny then. All my secrets, I won’t have anything to write about [in my book].”
On her holiday plans.
"I can't wait to stay home. To be in your own house and place."
On her weekly movie nights.
"I see movies because I'm in the movie business. I liked [Bad Teacher], that was really funny."
