Not only will you have the opportunity to eat such a doughnut -- called the Gigantor, naturally -- but you could win a $95 gift card while you're at it, which would mean many more Gigantors, cream cheese puffs, chocolate-dipped croissants and other specialities of the northwest Bakersfield bakery, celebrating its grand reopening after being closed a month for a remodeling project.

"We expanded the kitchen, the whole store, from the dining room to the back, restrooms included," said owner Nai Chhaykrith. "We have 'new' everything. New furniture, new showcase (for the pastries)."

As part of the celebration, free doughnuts will be offered -- one per customer -- from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Kelly 95.3 radio will do a live broadcast from 7 to 10 a.m.; and jazz music will be provided by local saxophonist Paul Perez and friends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Perhaps the most anticipated event, though, is the Gigantor competition, which starts at 8:15 a.m. Only 10 contestants will vie for the gift card, but challengers are still being accepted. Apply through the Sugar Twist Facebook page or by email, info@sugarTwistBakery.com.

The winner also will receive his or her name and picture on a plaque and the title "Doughnut King Champion."

Sugar Twist opened on Nov. 11, 2011, at the shopping center on Brimhall and Calloway. Beyond the remodel, the company is in the process of revamping the menu.

"We added more cakes and are working on introducing gluten-free products to the menu," Chhaykrith said. "We are going to play with panini sandwiches and French macarons."

Chhaykrith said he and his staff of 10 to 12 are looking forward to the grand reopening as a way to thank their loyal customers while adding some new ones.

"We have been really blessed. Business has been really good. I just want to thank all the fans and customers."
