Today being Father's Day, many restaurants will be running specials to help you honor dear old dad.
BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse not only will be giving a limited-edition Father's Day pint glass to every dad all weekend, but you can enter to win a trip for four to the 2013 PGA championship tournament. The Outback Steakhouse opens at 11 a.m. for Father's Day, and has a weekend-long promotion in which dads can win free Outback food for a year (two $25 vouchers a month). Dads could also win $25 vouchers and coupons worth $5 off for their next visit. Denny's is offering a $6 Classic Burger and free root beer floats via a Facebook e-card promotion. A&W restaurants are offering 90-cent Papa Burgers. The Hooters chain is giving a $5 gift card to everyone who buys a $25 gift card for dad and also will run its Wednesday Buy 10 Wings, Get 10 Free special all day on Father's Day. It offered the same special on Mother's Day, according to Nation's Restaurant News, and saw a significant bump in its business.

New sweet treats at Vons
Vons at The Marketplace has an interesting new product in the bakery section, Crunchy Cookie Chips ($3.99), available in four flavors: original, cinnamon sugar, chocolate chip and sea salted peanut butter. The product is made by HannahMax Baking out of Gardena, and the slogan on the front is "Tastes like a Cookie, Eats like a Chip." The cookie is ultra thin and ultra crispy, like chips, and yes I'm sure you could consume them as quickly and easily as the common Frito-Lay product. Joanne Adirim, the company founder, has a message on the back promising that her product will be made only with the best ingredients such as milled cane sugar, butter, whole eggs, no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, trans fats or GMO products.
Reader David Irvine passed a couple recommendations along in a recent email: a beer and a sandwich. The beer is a new creation from Lengthwise (three locations in town) called Zeus, which he called a "grand slam. If you want to compare it to a great beer, I would say it's their Pliny the Elder." His sandwich recommendation was found at Athena's Greek Cafe and Bakery (9612 Flushing Quail Road, 588-2324) a small Greek place near the Rosedale Lengthwise. Specifically it's the pork gyro, but what made it great in his opinion was the addition of hash browns to the sandwich. "For $10 you get a huge amount of meat and all of the fixins inside plus an added feature, hash browns. I have never heard of this, so at the suggestion of the owner I added hash browns to it on a whole-wheat pita ... I know you have written about them before but thought it deserved a shoutout."
