LOIS HENRY: Animal rescue trying to save puppies needs help

Two mixed-breed puppies found dumped near Vaquero Energy at Comanche Drive and Hermosa Road earlier this week get treatment at a veterinarian's office. They are severely malnourished. There were originally seven pups but two died of starvation, according to Nancy Cathey of Cathey's Rescue, who is trying to save the rest of the pups. Vaquero employees regularly find dumped animals in the area and often call Cathey to help.

Nancy Cathey, owner of Cathey's K-9 Rescue, is trying to save five puppies that were dumped along Hermosa Road just east of Comanche Drive earlier this week.

There were seven but two died of starvation. One had been eating rocks to try and survive.

They are about seven weeks old and look to be Lab mixed with doberman or Rottweiler, Cathey said.

The other pups aren't in very good shape. All are suffering severe malnutrition and parasite infections. Two are at veterinarian offices and may have to stay there a while.

Which is why Cathey is asking for the public's help. Her rescue is located in the Lake Isabella area and is called on a great deal to help when dogs are found abandoned. Often that involves large vet bills.

"Our bills are routinely over $10,000 a year," Cathey said.

She runs a legit operation, which I've featured before. She even holds an annual spay/neuter clinic to help low-income seniors with their pet needs.

Cathey's K-9 may be small, but she's well-known in many circles.

In fact, employees of Vaquero Energy, who found the pups near their plant, regularly call Cathey for help as people have made the area a regular dumping ground.

Aside from donations, Cathey is begging people to please surrender their animals to the shelter. Even if they're euthanized, it's better than an agonizing death by starvation, she said.

Take unwanted animals to the Kern County Animal Shelter at 201 South Mount Vernon Ave., Bakersfield, CA, 93307. Or call the shelter at 321-3000 to pick animals up.

Don't dump them on the side of the road!

Donations can be sent to:

Cathey's K-9 Rescue, P.O. Box 622 Lake Isabella, CA, 93240, TAX I.D 91-2134340.
