I've spent the past few weeks writing about heavy topics as kids went back to school and suddenly wanted to be on various social networks such as Ask.fm and Instagram.

So time to lighten it up a bit.

One of the great things about this time of year is high school football.

Sports Reporter Zach Ewing is synonymous with that topic here in Kern County, and is bumping up his coverage of it on BVarsity Live.

A year ago the live webcast launched with a late-night post-game show and local sports fans tuned in and called in.

This year the BVarsity Live schedule includes a weekly pre-game show that's live online at 2 p.m. Thursday, a live video webcast of the Game of the Week Friday night, and the 11 p.m. Friday wrap-up and call-in show.

Everything is shown live on Bakersfield.com, and can be found later on Youtube.com/Bakotube.

You don't have to be at home in front of your computer, either. You can watch on your smartphone or tablet, too.

This Friday night Zach and Louis Amestoy will be at the Bakersfield vs. Garces game beginning at 7 p.m.

Keep up with all the high school sports news by following B Varsity Live on Facebook (facebook.com/bvarsitylive) and on Twitter (Twitter.com/BVarsityLive). You can -- and should -- also follow Zach on Twitter (Twitter.com/ZEwing) for updates on local sports, and on local athletes who are now playing in college.

$500 in food

If you like to partake of some of Bakersfield's favorite restaurants, there's a contest you need to enter.

Bakersfield Life Magazine is giving away 12 gift cards to local restaurants valued at $500. Yes, that's $500 in local deliciousness.

The entry form is a simple photo upload. Deadline is Sunday, Sept. 15.

Look for the contest box in the top right on BakersfieldLife.com for details and the link to enter.

Healthy holidays

If you have a favorite holiday recipe that is not big on calories, the editors of BWell Magazine want to see it. One lucky entrant will receive a $25 gift card to Bakersfield's Village Grill.

Email your recipe to bwell@bakersfield.com by Tuesday, Sept. 17. Visit the BWell Facebook page (facebook.com/BWellMagazine) for details.

Mobile apps

We recently released a slick new mobile app for your tablets and smartphones. TBC Mobile is free in your app store; just search for The Bakersfield Californian in the iOS and Android app stores.

Privacy

New research from the Pew Research Center found that nearly 90 percent of Internet users have made some attempt to erase their activity online, and more than half have taken steps to avoid being tracked by people, organizations or the government.

The top way people are attempting to erase their online footprint is by clearing cookies and web history, followed by editing or deleting past posts online.
