Kern County unemployment rate nearly flat

Kern County's unemployment rate was nearly flat last month, rising slightly from 10.2 percent in June to 10.4 percent in July, according to the California Employment Development Department.

That's compared with 7.8 percent for California and 6.5 percent nationwide.

Unemployment traditionally ticks up slightly starting in May because of the loss of some seasonal jobs, but Kern's overall unemployment rate has generally been falling over the past two years.

The county lost 4,900 agricultural jobs between June and July, but gained 1,100 nonfarm jobs.

Comparing July 2014 to July 2013, the county gained 2,900 nonfarm jobs, but lost 1,200 agricultural positions.

Kern had the 46th worst unemployment rate of the state's 58 counties. Marin County's 4.4 percent unemployment was the state's best. Imperial County's 24.7 percent unemployment was California's worst.
