PEOPLE IN BUSINESS: GREG and GINA WEGIS
GREG and GINA WEGIS were named national winners at the 57th annual National Outstanding Young Farmers Awards Congress held earlier this month in Albuquerque, N.M. Greg Wegis earned a bachelor’s degree in crop science from Cal Poly and returned to his family’s farm in 1999. He grows row crops and tree crops such as almonds and pistachios. He worked with a tomato harvesting manufacturer to produce an 80-inch processing tomato harvester to standardize the farm’s row cropping patterns. Wegis built a blower system that pushes two rows of almonds into one row at harvest time, cutting harvest time in half. He manages soil moisture with a Web-based monitoring service. Wegis works on growing an irrigation powered assets and pump company and a GPS tracking business. His wife, Gina, spent eight years as an elementary school teacher before becoming a stay-at-home mother of their two children. Greg Wegis is vice president of the Kern County Farm Bureau and a director of the California Tomato Growers Association.
