MARY BEDARD has been appointed Auditor-Controller-County Clerk by the Kern County Board of Supervisors. She is expected to fill out the remaining two years in the term of Ann Barnett, who is retiring from the elected office Jan. 7. Bedard is chief of the special accounting division of the Auditor-Controller-County Clerk’s office, which processes payroll for more than 9,000 county employees, and reviews and approves more than 100,000 expenditures a year by the county and various districts. She started with the county in 1981 as an accountant in the Public Works Department and has worked as adjunct instructor of accounting at Bakersfield College. A licensed certified public accountant, she earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto and a master’s degree in accounting at the State University of New York at Albany. She also served as a volunteer with the Peace Corps.
