Jennifer Self was born and raised in Bakersfield and started her career at The Californian in 1988 at the tender age of 20. She discovered early on that editing was her true passion and spent the first 17 years of her career on the copy desk, editing stories, writing headlines and goofing off with the rest of the night crew. She accepted the features editor position in 2005, which has allowed her to pursue another dream: providing a spotlight for the vibrant cultural life of Kern County. The position of Eye Street editor allows Jennifer to write articles, organize coverage, edit all content that appears in the Eye Street section, and lead a dedicated crew of Californian staffers and freelancers. And with the recent launch of Californian Radio, she hosts a weekly one-hour program, giving the local arts scene another platform for promotion.
Oh, and she also does her best to keep family columnist Herb Benham in line.
