Steven Mayer has been a staff writer at The Californian since March 1997. He covered agriculture and water issues before moving to the education beat in late 1998. Mayer worked as acting assistant features editor in 2002. Since then he has covered Real People, Courts, and the Top Stories beat.
A Bakersfield native, Mayer became a journalist in mid-life after returning to school to earn a degree in English. Before that he worked as a musician, a purveyor of fine wines, a middle manager, and at a couple of jobs he'd like to forget.
He and his wife, Brenda, a teacher, have two sons, a Labrador retriever, and a mortgage that could be featured in a Japanese monster movie.
