Wells is a native of Buffalo, New York, but has lived most of his life in California growing up on the Central Coast. He graduated in 1978 from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in journalism and a concentration in advertising/public relations. In 1981, he received his MBA in management from Golden Gate University of San Francisco.
Wells, an 28-year veteran at The Californian oversees the Advertising Sales, Newspaper Marketing, Circulation, and Operations Divisions.
His work background includes stints in restaurant management, title insurance and more than 32 years in the newspaper industry. He has worked at newspapers in Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Napa Valley and Corona, California.
At The Californian he has held the positions of retail sales supervisor, retail advertising manager, director of sales and marketing and was named Vice President of Sales & Strategic Initiatives in 1998. In 2006 he was given the additional responsibilities of Circulation & Operations.
Local community involvement includes Past-President of Bakersfield West Rotary; Chairman of Kern Economic Development Corporation; and a Board Member of the Newspaper Association of America Display Federation; previous involvement includes Board of Director with the Greater Bakersfield Visitor and Convention Bureau; Link to Life, St. Francis School Foundation, Downtown Business Association and Junior Achievement. Wells is a two-term past president of the Californian Newspaper Advertising Executives Association. Wells is also known to play a round of golf... or two!
Wells and his wife, Karen, have three sons.
