Teenagers go through different stages as they grow up and sometimes it can be difficult for parents to keep up.

But keeping a close eye on who your children talk to, especially since social media is a big part of the lives of teens, is important.

Tuesday on "First Look with Scott Cox," Californian community engagement coordinator Jamie Butow talked about the emotional trends teens are experiencing through social media.

"Young girls and teens are in depression and they are using places like tumblr to get support," Butow said.

But sometimes that support is not the kind they need.

There are instances in which a teen going through depression talks to another person going through similar problems and the issue is not fixed. Rather, it's prolonged and intensified.

"It's important to talk to your kid and find out who their friends are and tell them they have to move forward no matter what happens," Butow said.
